Abstract
Power systems usually consist of thousands of buses, which make system analysis and redesign a particularly hard problem when proposing modifications in order to improve or modify existing functionality. Decomposition of a large-scale system into interconnected subsystems provides an effective way for the analysis, estimation and control of power systems. In this paper, a novel decomposition method is proposed to facilitate the placement of phasor measurement units for state estimation and control of power systems. An optimal problem is given based on not only point similarity but also the topology of power system, where non-overlapping subsystems with similar size can be derived. Moreover, the number of tie lines among subsystems is minimized and no isolated buses exist. Finally, the IEEE 14-bus power system is used to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.
