Lookup table realisation of adaptive digital filters with data inputs having multiple levels

A study is made of how to efficiently realise the adaptive digital filters the inputs of which are N level data such as in data echo cancellation and decision-feedback equalisation. It is shown that those adaptive filters with M weights can be realised using a lookup table with size of 2^M compared to that of N^M in the direct form table structure when the underlying channels are assumed linear
