Abstract
An efficient initialisation technique is presented for vector quantiser design. The initial reproduction vectors are chosen so that their respective clusters have approximately similar sizes to optimise the codebook entropy. Experimental results illustrate the application of the proposed technique to image coding: the training process quickly yield to a near-optimal codebook with a smaller quantisation error and a higher entropy.
