Accurate analytical formulas for gain-optimised EDFAs

Abstract :
Analytical expressions for the small- and large-signal optimum gain, optimum length, transparency power and the 3 and 10 dB gain compression powers of gain-optimised EDFAs are presented. The formulas apply at pump wavelengths without ESA, e.g. 980 and 1480 nm, provided noise saturation can be ignored. They can be applied accurately both to fibres with highly confined dopant and fully doped cores.
