Abstract
Widespread efforts are underway to bring computing to the developing world in an effort to make access to information more widely available, and so help developing countries help themselves. This paper describes a number of initiatives in both hardware and software engineering that are aimed at bringing down the cost of computing, and so make the communications and access to information that the developed world takes for granted much more widely available
