Abstract
A team from Stanford University won the Grand Challenge autonomous vehicle race organized by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Using a Volkswagen Touareg SUV they called Stanley, the Stanford team was able to finish the 211 km racecourse stretching through Nevada´s Mojave Desert in six hours and 53 minutes, winning the $2 million purse. With three other vehicles finishing the race in less than 10 hours, the Grand Challenge showcases how far robotics has improved over the last few years.
