Abstract
The 29 papers in this special section are representative of the papers presented at the Optical Fiber Communications/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) held in March 2006 in Anaheim, CA. Some of the topics covered include: practical applications of photonic crystal fibers and waveguides for light generation, wavelength conversion, and switching; phase modulation formats for increased spectral efficiency and slow light generation; trends in long-haul transport systems; and electronic and optical code-division multiple access, wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) PON, and microwave-photonic links.
