Abstract
Engineering students are not proficient in fundamental mathematics. Four principal causes of the problem are postulated and solutions are proposed. Implementation of the recommendations will require a different approach to mathematics instruction involving closer cooperation between mathematics and engineering departments, and development of improved learning materials.
