  • Abstract
"Back to basics" advice for SMEs wishing to join the lean wave. Many companies are joining the "lean wave", just as many are falling by the wayside because they see the variety of tools on offer as one-off, quick fix implementations, something of an add-on to current working practices. Becoming lean does not happen overnight and in order to work, it requires a company-wide cultural transformation to take place. The first step has to be commitment from senior management. The next step is to select a facilitator, who will drive the process forward with the support from certified trainers who have had prior experience in implementing lean concepts. A team must be appointed. Next comes the training; in-depth information, not an overview, and the education of the team are vital to lean success.
