The fairchild scholars program-a new form of industry-university cooperation

In this paper we describe a new graduate education program involving industry-university cooperation in the form of a partnership between Fairchild Industries, Germantown, MD, and the University of Maryland, College Park. We analyze the reasons that made such a partnership desirable to the company and to the university. We describe the nature and main features of the progam, compare it to earlier similar programs, communicate our experiences with it during its frst years of operation, and discuss the outlook for its future.
