Abstract
The bridging and routing of IEEE 802 and fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) local area network (LAN) switched multimegabit data service (SMDS) are invested for both intraenterprise and interenterprise networking. Bridging and routing as mechanisms for the interconnection of LAN end stations are explained, and SMDS is characterized. The solutions that have been developed within standards forums are outlined.<>
