Abstract :
Optical disc based video recorders have recently become available. This paper discusses the application format for a system based on an advanced optical rewritable system (DVR-blue). The format is especially suited for broadcast recording. The high rate (35 Mbit/s) and capacity (22 GB) of DVR-blue enables recording of HDTV (24 Mbit/s) for 2 hours, along with new features like simultaneous record and playback of SDTV material. Playback of edited material is seamless. We show that a set of allocation rules for the data combined with reference drive performance guarantees simultaneous record and playback for SDTV streams (⩽10 Mbit/s) using a large physically contiguous collection of data called a segment
