Abstract :
A magnetic recording head with an inclined-pad for cylindrical magnetic storage media of 1-in (25.4-mm) diameter using a perpendicular double-layered medium with a CoPtCr-SiO2 recording layer was investigated. The inclined-pad-type head had a trailing pad formed on the trailing edge of the head, which had a single-pole-type (SPT) writer and a giant magnetoresistive (GMR) reader, and an inclined pad formed on the leading edge of the head, which protruded in the thickness direction compared with the trailing pad, for generating an air-bearing force. The inclined-pad-type slider was fabricated and its fly ability was examined with a read/write tester. Its flying characteristics had almost the same linear velocity dependence as the theoretical design, and are thought to be a potentially valuable component of cylindrical magnetic storage systems
