Abstract :
While many magnetoelastic wave (MEW) devices employ piezoelectric methods for wave generation, the authors demonstrate the feasibility of generating and detecting MEWs using a pair of planar coils. An Fe-Si-B magnetic film sputtered onto glass was used; waves were found to propagate in both the magnetic film and the glass. For the film with an MEW velocity of 5 × 103 km/s and coil pitch of 1 mm, the detection output should be strongest at multiples and fractions of the 5 MHz fundamental, and in fact output peaks were observed at 1.3, 1.7, and 2.5 MHz.
