Abstract :
A simulation of the spacing between a magnetic head and medium has been performed to investigate the spacing characteristics of head shapes used with video floppy disks. In this simulation, the finite element method was used to solve Reynold´s equation and the equation of motion for the transformation of the medium. Both equations were discretized simultaneously. The analysis yielded the following results: 1) This method can be used to efficiently obtain a converging solution, despite the non-linearity of the equations. 2) The spacing has a tendency to be constant with respect to protrusions of the head. 3) The effect of a groove on the head surface is the same as that of a narrow track width for the head. 4) For practical use, the groove should have a depth and width of more than 2 ¿m and 5 ¿m, respectively.
