Abstract :
In this report, the authors discuss the relationship between peak shift and bit length as they search for ways to lower the bit error rate of magneto-optical disks used in writable/erasable optical memories. The bit error rate of both width recording and edge recording were compared, and it was found that in response to fluctuations in the recording power, edge-recorded information did not change, but width recording fluctuated greatly (approximately 10 percent in response to ±10 percent power fluctuations). Although width recording proved to be better for the same recording capacity, peak shift could be kept down to 1/3 with the edge recording method.
