Abstract :
The authors present a method for simulating the performance of LAN-based energy management systems (EMSs), in particular those with an open architecture. The simulation was for a 10 minute time period for normal activity and peak activity power system states of the power system. The performance of the EMS was studied by means of a discrete-time simulation package. The baseline system was an EMS for a medium-sized electric utility consisting of two Ethernet LANs. An alternative configuration using one Ethernet LAN was also simulated. Two scenarios were defined for the power system in normal and peak activity states. A number of test cases were defined and studied. The simulation results for a number of defined output parameters are tabulated and discussed
