Abstract
This survey article is the first of a four-part series that reviews programs that are useful in an academic setting. Emphasis is on those that can be utilized in electrical engineering coursework. The criteria for selecting software are set forth, and the necessary components of the ideal toolkit are identified. Each of these categories-graphing/plotting, word processing, graphics/schematic drawing, simulation, and miscellaneous special applications-is examined in some detail.<>
