Abstract
The factors which have affected evolution of the world´s distribution systems, and their divergence, with implications for application in lesser developed countries are discussed. The advantages of the North American and European style systems, while recognizing that neither is intrinsically superior, are described. The need for recognition of legitimate variances in distribution systems and their associated equipment when developing relevant standards is discussed
