Abstract
The impression created by frequently quoted statistics is that the effectiveness of education systems is falling and that industry is taking over the role of education. The truth is that the educational standards which were acceptable are not good enough for the increasingly competitive environment in which businesses now operate. Discriminating customers have forced businesses to focus on quality; industry now needs to share its experience with academia so as to increase the quality of education and encourage a discriminating ethos in the student body. The author discusses these aspects of education
