Abstract :
The behaviour of the printed monopole when used with a finite ground plane differs considerably from the expected behaviour in an infinite ground plane. When the ground plane is small, this influences the resonant frequency, acting like a reflecting plane. The polarisation is not linear, and the dependence of the operating frequency with the dimensions of the monopole is not linear. For that reason this monopole with a finite ground size is called a coupled patch antenna. This antenna has very good features for personal communications, i.e. very small size, good gain and high directivity. The antenna is designed for use with a wireless modem but can be used in any personal communications system. The analysis of the performance is achieved by using the non-uniform FDTD in combination with the recently developed perfect matching layer superabsorbing boundary condition
