Abstract
The transmission of digitized speed using a modified burst mode technique is described. The modification exploits the fact that an interactive conversation does not need an instantaneously symmetric duplex channel. Dynamic adaptation of transmission rate reduces overall channel capacity requirements without significant subjective degradation. The method also has application to multiplexed duplex speech/data systems.
