Abstract
The accepted mode of operation of ferroelectric liquid crystal devices is to place them between crossed polarisers. The authors demonstrate that such devices may be used as diffractive modulators without polarisers. A one-to-many polarisation independent switch is presented for singlemode optical fibre networks, based on dynamic liquid crystal holograms
