Abstract
The ageing control system for the Panama Canal has recently been replaced ensuring that the 92-year old waterway can meet growing demand. The Pedro Miguel (PM) facility-two locks-has been in operation. Each lock has had the controls upgraded to electronic workstations, which provide automation features in both operation and maintenance functions. The project was executed in close coordination with other machinery conversion projects, converting from 1914 electro mechanical technology to modern state of the art electro hydraulics, which included the replacement of the individual local controls.
