Abstract :
This paper describes a preprocessing method for DCT-based image compression, which is independent of the compression process. The method predicts the likelihood that visible distortion appears at each location, and applies filtering accordingly. For prediction, an auto-correlation function is utilized as an index to estimate the distribution of the power spectrum. This process improves the image quality of the resulting compressed image by reducing the ringing distortions
