Abstract
Coal´s continued role as the premier fuel for electricity generation need not conflict with the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This article begins by outlining the percentage of the world´s electricity generated by coal with likely projections into the future. It then goes on to examine the conversion efficiency of coal-fired power stations, the reduction in harmful emissions, and the use of new supercritical boilers. It concludes by discussing the problem of CO/sub 2/ emission and its role in the greenhouse effect and how this could be mitigated by wholesale carbon capture and sequestration.
