Abstract
A filter called the recursive approaching signal filter (RASF) is mathematically derived based on a recursive computation of the previous filtering output. A key aspect of the RASF is that it can be transformed into other linear or nonlinear filters or their combination by changing a parameter. Special attention is paid to the effect of varying this parameter on the behavior of the RASF. When tested with model data, the RASF compares favorably with other methods in removal of noise, having better edge and detailed information preservation properties and computational simplicity.<>
