Abstract :
A novel application-specific frame memory, the picture processing RAM (PPRAM), was developed as a low-cost hardware solution for image data compression. The picture processing RAM presents a new solution to calculating motion vectors. The PPRAM was designed equipped with additional logic circuits. Because of this, the motion estimation algorithm can be processed utilizing the full internal bandwidth of the frame memory. It is shown that a reasonable number of logic circuits besides the frame memory cells on the same chip can reduce the total number of chips and the off-chip wiring effort as well as the total number of transistors
