Abstract
The effect of Freon 113 additive ( approximately 1%) on DC and impulse corona discharges of SF6 is investigated in a point-plane gap arrangement, in the pressure range 0.1-0.2 MPa. Freon is found to inhibit corona activity and delay leader inception, and the results obtained are discussed in terms of existing models on streamer and leader mechanisms of SF6, as well as known chemical and physical properties of Freon 113. It is suggested that the observed effect of Freon 113 is probably related to its high attachment cross-section and its ability to form stabler negative ions.
