Abstract :
It was demonstrated that a cholesteric liquid-crystal cell placed between two liquid-crystal quarter-waveplates functions as a linear polarizer. The liquid crystal linear polarizer constructed yielded an extinction ratio of 205:1, which can be improved further by using glass plates of better optical quality for cell substrates. Liquid-crystal linear polarizers are expected to be used as large-aperture polarizing elements for Faraday optical isolators in a high-power laser system.<>
