Abstract
This paper presents the design and implementation of a knowledge-based communication system for distributed expert systems. This communication system has been designed to handle the wide range of protocols among cooperating expert systems, to be flexible to cover new application domains, and to be efficient in its implementation. It has been implemented using a specialized forward-chaining rule-based system in order to achieve these features and applied in a prototype framework for distributed expert systems, called HECODES
