Abstract :
The surface potentials for shield configurations representative of typical giant magnetoresistive heads are approximated using conformal mapping. These solutions are used in a simplified reciprocity calculation to estimate the dependence of magnetic read width on bit aspect ratio. The growth of magnetic read width due to side reading is likely to counter any signal-to-noise ratio benefits to lowering bit aspect ratio below a value of about 5.
