Abstract :
A possible method of increasing the duty cycle of the CEA electron synchrotron to perhaps twice that now achieved, by current pulsing a one-turn winding around all 48 synchrotron magnet backlegs is described. A half sinusoid of current applied to the winding in such a way as to flatten the magnetic field at its maximum value can, in principle, increase the time interval when ??B/B is less than ??% from 500 ??sec normally to about 1000 ??sec. Several aspects of flat topping by this method are discussed, e.g. magnet power circuit effects, costs, and other peripheral effects on radio frequency power, beam bumps, and shielding.
