Abstract
The perfectly matched layer (PML) method is widely used for truncating unbounded domains in simulations of optical waveguiding structures. In this letter, we develop a practical procedure for selecting a PML profile for a given set of discretization parameters. Our approach is designed for frequency domain simulations and it is based on minimizing the average discrete reflectivity of the PML
