Abstract :
The author identifies the issues most often associated with electric utility competition. He discusses the implications that increased competition and a new focus on the customer have for technology requirements on the 21st century. He then describes NetComm, a joint project that establishes a communication network with integrated, microprocessor-based electronic meters and packet radios. The project began as a concept in March, 1986 and is now in pilot testing. The system is being expanded by approximately 100 meters per week.
