Abstract :
The magneto-optical Kerr rotation angle ¿K for polished bulk PtMnSb was found to be greatly enhanced after annealing at temperatures above 400°C, although the change in the spectrum of the reflectance R was very small. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, and calculation of R and ¿K assuming the formation of an overlayer, indicated that the enhancement of ¿K is not attributable to an overlayer effect. It was found that the enhancement of ¿K was instead correlated with the change in magnetic anisotropy at the surface due to annealing.
