Abstract :
Vitrification of radioactive liquid waste into glass is the best known method today for long-term storage of high radioactivity nuclear waste products. The electrical service and control system for an experimental electrically heated glass melter to handle nonradioactive materials, installed at Savannah River Laboratory, are described. Data accumulated and design and operating experience acquired in building and operating this melter are being used to design a melter to be installed in a processing area for use with radioactive materials.
