Abstract
A new magnetic gear using a permanent magnet has been developed by the author. The design and performance characteristics of such magnetic gears have been reported previously. In this report, the mechanism by which magnetic force is generated in the meshing area is elucidated. An experimental meshing model is used to clarify the principle of operation of the magnetic gear. The meshing area consists of intersecting and main contact zones of the tooth profiles. In the intersecting zone, the negative magnetic force is clearly small and can be ignored when the intersecting tooth profile is larger than 8 degrees, as in the case studied.
