Abstract
The use of power-line carriers to transport signals between protective relaying equipment at line terminals is discussed. The purpose is to determine which line section is faulted. Critical factors for reliable carrier performance are identified. Automatic carrier testing using programmable controllers is examined, and installation of the programmable controller carrier checkback is described. The performance of the latter is considered, and its role on industry is assessed.<>
