Abstract
The magnetostriction of rapidly quenched Tb(Fe1-x Mx )2 alloys at room temperature, with M=Co, Ni, Mn, Cr, Ti, V, was investigated. The values of ¿s at low values of x (x=0.05 for M=Ti, V, Mn, Ni; x=0.1 for M=Cr; x=0.2 for M=Co) were between 1500 and 1700 Ã10¿6, and did not show an appreciable dependence on the element M. For x¿0.1, the value of ¿s decreases rapidly with increasing M content for M=Ti, V, Cr. The magnetic softness was evaluated from the magnetostriction at remanence (¿R ) and the magnetic softness parameter Hc ´. The Tb(Fe0.9 Mn0.1 )2 alloy shows the best magnotostriction behavior, with values for ¿s , ¿R and Hc ´ of 1400Ã10¿6, 620Ã10¿6 and 24 kA/m, respectively.
