Abstract :
The magnetic properties and recording characteristics of magnetic recording media with the magnetic layer divided by a Cr interlayer (i.e. a multilayered medium) have been investigated. A reduction of media noise and improvement in SNR were observed. At an interlayer thickness of 3 nm, the SNR was higher than that of CoCrTa singlelayered media. If the interlayer thickness is greater than 3 nm, the overwrite level is lower than for single-layered media. When the thicknesses of the two magnetic layers are equal, the multilayered medium offers good recording characteristics.
