Abstract :
MR. R. W. BEDFORD: We are indeed grateful to Mr. Ronald for presenting his paper and charts, which are extremely useful as a basis for ratefixing. There appear, however, to be two important matters omitted, in view of present day conditions in industry. Firstly, owing to keen competition work in many cases can only be obtained at a very low price. The estimator bases his quotation on average costs, including a certain labour value. When the order materialises, the labour value should be passed on to the shops. Close co-operation is essential between the estimator and the ratefixer in order that the latter may see what labour value the job will carry.
