Abstract :
MR. MILLER: Our Chairman (Mr. Fraser), rightly pointed out that we are in a somewhat similar position to that when highspeed steel came into use. The change now necessary in the design of machine tools in order to use the new cutting materials is? however, even greater than it was then. This stresses the importance of carrying out much more exhaustive tests on cutting tools, similar to those which were instituted by the Manchester Association of Engineers and carried out at this College. The data given in the paper can only be regarded as preliminary and generally indicative of the direction in which the results so far obtained tend to show changes in the pressure on the tool.
