Abstract :
One of the paradoxes of the World Wide Web is that while we frequently find ourselves navigating to online media, we rarely use online media to help us with this navigation. Consider, for example, the conventions of (legally) browsing for music on the Web. Four years ago, composer Philip Glass approached us at IBM Research to develop an online catalog of his works. We had a talented intern working with us that summer and he developed a quick prototype by combining two visualization techniques: scatter plots and zooming.
