Abstract :
In some electrical engineering applications we may wish to construct a desired output by means of small discrete values (quanta). In many cases, the desired output is a periodic alternating waveform of a certain frequency. One such example is found in electrical machines [1] where the generated voltage is constructed by individual voltages of each coil. The windings are distributed in slots in a number of ways. Each of the individual coils contribute a rectangularly distributed magneto-motive force (mmf) and the total mmf distribution has a staircase-like shape. Fourier series expansion of the mmf leads to the desired fundamental frequency and undesired harmonics.
