Abstract
Development of a high-performance electronic translator for a permanent magnet, bifilar wound, high-torque stepping motor is reported in this paper. Towards this end, novel features like 1) a thyristor controlled programmable voltage source to accomplish constant current forcing, 2) thyristor flip-flops for switching current in motor winding, and 3) a ramping circuit for smooth acceleration and retardation without missing steps, have been incorporated. Consequently, a flat torque versus stepping rate curve right up to 3200 pulses per second (pps) and a maximum stepping rate of 4100 pps have been obtained. These results are superior to those given by the manufacturer.
