Abstract
The availability of a compact and inexpensive microprocessor central processing unit (CPU) is likely to change the emphasis in numerical control (NC) system design from hardware to software. The software control of a majority of the machine tool functions increases the flexibility and reliability of the system. This requires a careful tradeoff between hardware and software.
