Abstract
The influence of temperature treatment before or after irradiation on the radiation damage of plastic scintillators and wavelength shifters was measured. The influence of temperature treatment on the radiation stability before or after irradiation was investigated. The polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA)-based wavelength shifters showed strong recovery in argon with heating after irradiation, whereas the polystyrene-based scintillator SCSN-38 in air suffered with heating before and with heating after irradiation. UV absorbants added to the wavelength shifter material Y-7 in PMMA were responsible for additional radiation damage in the scintillator/wavelength shifter system SCSN-38/Y-7 if its cutoff wavelengths were higher than 360 nm
