Abstract
Some of the design problems peculiar to TRIUMF are discussed. These problems arise from the large size of the magnet (4000 tons) and low average magnetic field which in turn are required by the necessity of avoiding electric stripping of the H- ions. Gas stripping of the ions requires the low operating pressure of 4 Ã 10-8 torr. Problems arising from the acceleration on the 5th harmonic of the ion frequency and their relation to the unusually tight tolerances on the position of the accelerating electrodes are discussed. Some preliminary results of the magnetic field measurements are presented.
