Abstract :
The authors evaluate a cluster, layered cluster, and layered-modular implementation of an active data base for satellite remote-sensing research. They also evaluate the potential of a fully modular layered architectural design for meeting the needs of Earth Observing System researchers, concluding that it would be well suited to the evolving requirements of this multidisciplinary research community. Finally, from the perspective of their research and development experience, the authors conclude that a fully modular layered architecture could be implemented (although not cost effectively in the near term) with current-generation technology
